The December installment of Climate Fridays, a monthly community series held on the first Friday of each month that brings together climate activists, students, community partners, and residents to learn about regional climate priorities and strengthen collective action across Santa Barbara County.
December’s gathering focused on sustainability and energy innovations in Goleta, with emphasis on local progress toward resilience and clean energy leadership.
Craig Lewis of the Clean Coalition spotlighted a major advancement in regional energy resilience: Greenbark, a new utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) being developed by Scale Microgrids. As Craig discusses the broader role of BESS in delivering reliable and resilient energy, Greenbark will serve as a central example. Located at an optimal interconnection point near the Ellwood Gas Peaker Plant, Greenbark has the potential to provide unmatched resilience across the entire Goleta Load Pocket, strengthening grid reliability and accelerating the retirement of the Ellwood Gas Peaker Plant by enabling a clean, modern alternative at the same interconnection point.
Whether you’re a student, advocate, policymaker, or sustainability professional, this session offered meaningful insight into local climate progress and cutting-edge clean energy solutions that position Goleta at the forefront of community resilience.
