Santa Barbara Unified School District solar celebrations – 31 August 2022
The Clean Coalition played an integral part in these solar and Solar Microgrid projects, which were celebrated on 31 August 2022 from 2–3:00pm PT.
Wednesday, 31 August 2022 at Adams Elementary School – 2pm to 3pm
The Santa Barbara Unified School District’s solar and Solar Microgrid projects will bring significant resilience to the Santa Barbara region and help realize the game-changing Goleta Load Pocket Community Microgrid vision.

Ribbon cutting event
- Speakers who envisioned & realized the project, including Craig Lewis from the Clean Coalition.
- Leadership from the Santa Barbara Unified School District.
- Refreshments & appetizers provided by ENGIE, the project developer.
SBUSD solar and Solar Microgrids
- The Clean Coalition completed feasibility studies for the SBUSD’s Solar Microgrids in mid-2020.
- This was followed by executing a state-of-the-art Request for Proposals (RFP) process, and negotiating a contract with ENGIE, the project developer awarded with a 28-year fixed-rate power purchase agreement (PPA).
- 14 sites proceeded with solar, 6 of those with full Solar Microgrids.
- SBUSD is expected to benefit from $7.8 million in guaranteed energy costs savings and an additional $6.5 million value-of-resilience.
Goleta Load Pocket Community Microgrid (GLPCM)
- The Goleta Load Pocket (GLP) is 70-mile region from Point Conception to Lake Casitas that is served by a single point of connection to California’s transmission grid, via the Goleta Substation near Dos Pueblos High School.
- The GLP receives almost all of its energy from a single transmission route that traverses 40 miles of treacherous terrain, making the GLP’s energy supply dangerously vulnerable to fires, earthquakes, and landslides.
- The GLPCM will bring indefinite solar-driven backup power and deliver an unparalleled trifecta of economic, environmental, and resilience benefits to the GLP.
- This cutting-edge Clean Coalition initiative showcases the energy system of the future.
