CEC: Craig Lewis on “Flattening the Duck”

Executive Director Craig Lewis presented at this event, which took place on February 11, 2014 in Sacramento, CA.

Craig Lewis, Executive Director of the Clean Coalition, presented at the California Energy Commissionon February 11 from 11:00am to noon PT in Sacramento, CA.

Mr. Lewis’ presentation, titledFlattening the Duck: Facilitating Renewables for the 21st Century Grid(PPTorPDF), laid out how to create a a truly reliable grid that is capable of powering California’s economy with renewables for decades to come. Integrating renewable energy with cost-effective intelligent grid solutions – such as demand response, energy storage, and advanced inverters – offers the quickest and most affordable pathway towards a cleaner, more efficient, and more reliable power system.

Specifically, Mr. Lewis’ presentation addressed the California Independent System Operator’s infamous ‘Duck Chart’, which predicts significant grid reliability challenges later this decade. Through the use of preferred resources, California can ensure power system reliability while staying aligned with the state’s established climate and energy goals – rather than extending dependencies on sources of energy like natural gas and nuclear that have clearly proven in California over the past few years to be alarmingly dirty, unsafe, and unreliable.
